Angel Investors: Ask the Angels (Pasadena Angels)

Ask the Angels is a Pasadena, CA based group of angel investors.

Since our start in late 2000, we’ve made a concerted effort to actively interact and work with entrepreneurs and start-up companies in Southern California. Most of this interaction has been through companies going through our funding process, or individually meeting people through local events and conferences such as LA County Tech Week, VentureNet, or the Tech Coast Venture Network monthly programs. In early 2008 we started Ask the Angels to give entrepreneurs a forum to interact with our individual members and to ask questions related to start-up companies and fundraising. As our organization has grown, we have received an increasing stream of questions from local entrepreneurs on a wide range of topics, including fundraising, company formation, legal matters and marketing. Rather than address these individually, we’ve decided to answer them through a public forum so that more entrepreneurs can benefit.

It is as risk free as it gets, a payment is made by the entrepreneur for £99, which then means that a summary of their proposed business is posted on the site for Business Angels to see. Unlike other investment websites, Angel's Den offers secure viewing for Angels who have signed up for the site, which means that only true investors are looking at the opportunities on there and ideas can remain the intellectual property of the entrepreneur, until a business partnership is made.

Entrepreneurs have access to over 1,700 Angels on the site, many of which act on behalf of other angels, so the true number runs into the 4000's.

On Christmas Day 2007, there were 207 Angels looking for deals to invest in. Searches for businesses are done so by sector so that the 'pitches' on the site are hitting the relevant investor making success rate higher.

Tim Keane is the current Entrepreneur in Residence at Marquette University, in the College of Business Administration.

In Fall 2007, he was named Director of the Kohler Center for Entrepreneurship, a cross campus initiative of Marquette University.

He founded and sold a CRM company, Retail Target Marketing Systems, Inc., before which he worked for GE Healthcare in Milwaukee. He has invested in a wide range of private companies and sits on a number of company boards.

Mr. Payne is a business executive, entrepreneur and “angel investor” (investor/mentor in to startup companies). He received degrees in ceramic engineering in the mid ’60s from the University of Illinois and has since lived in Southern California and Southern Nevada. He held positions with two Fortune 500 companies before co-founding Solid State Dielectrics, Inc. in 1971. After selling SSD to DuPont in 1982, he managed the merged business and sought new opportunities for DuPont in advanced ceramics until 1986. Since 1980, Mr. Payne has invested his time and money in over 30 startup companies. He is currently an Entrepreneur in Residence at the E. M. Kauffman Foundation (www.emkf.org) and active investor in early stage companies.
